Make Occupy’s voice a constant in OC Register polls !

Hi All,

Real quick, as many of you know if we can get 50 Occupy sympathizers to sign-up we can get Occupy a permanent voice in the OC Register polls. (They already have Dem., Rep., Tea Party and a few others.)We have just 20 some emails left to go!

Let me explain how it works, it’s really simple and low to no obligation.SEND AN EMAIL TO:  mwisckol@ocregister.com

with subject: Pulse Occupy Signup

Include only:

Your Name (whichever you want to use)
Your Email (again, whichever you want)
City you live in (and if you don’t live in OC at least specify you do read the register)
Phone (you can use an online number like Google Voice if you prefer, it’s just to confirm we’re not all the same person, they won’t call you)And the group you’re affiliated with… (we’re saying Occupy Orange County)

THEY WON’T SHARE YOUR INFO

That’s it… I’m sure we’ll get to the full 50 by the anniversary, and it’ll be one more way to keep Occupy’s voice in the public’s minds in the years ahead.

(When they ask a survey question you will get an email, but don’t have to respond them when you don’t want to.)
Thanks!!!

#Occupy #OC Affinity Group Seeks Donations to Continue #Anaheim Coverage

Here’s the link to this story on the official Occupy Wall St. forum: http://occupywallst.org/forum/anaheim-occupy-oc-affinity-group-seeks-donations-a/

Hi! Thanks so much for listening to us in OC. George Olivio and I (longtime journalist and media guru Sheryll Alexander) have been in solidarity with OWS as Occupy Orange County CA (Occupy OC) media team organizers since before our first protest on Oct. 15 2011 where about 1,000 citizens came and protested against the banksters. Our OC Affinity Group has been involved in several successful direct actions over the past year including Occupy the Courts and a Romney satire protest, among others. On July 21, our affinity group dove into action to cover the #Anaheim crisis in solidarity with OWS and Occupy OC. Without any renumeration whatsoever, we have covered #Anaheim now for 20 days to support the families and the downtrodden community with personal outreach and a media storm including livestreaming of every action as well as excellent live and continuous media coverage across all social media platforms linking the WORLD with #Anaheim and Occupy OC. Now, we are continuing our solidarity with OWS as well as Theresa Smith of Anaheim Cruzsaders in her protests against APD every Saturday at Disneyland (wow!) and every Sunday across from APD HQ. This is high visibility stuff, but we can NOT keep going without some funding as our families are going hungry and our internet is going to get cut off tomorrow. As a media organizer who covers #Anaheim continuously on my Facebook feed and the Occupy OC FB page, I personally need $134 by tomorrow to pay my wireless bill. Plus, my family needs an extra $100-200 for food and gas to get us through the weekend. If you know anyone who can help, please let me know ASAP. We are receiving no donation help from OC as we are seen as rebels, I guess. Ugh. OC Affinity Group thanks you for your help!!

Sheryll Alexander, independent journalist and media occupier

Occupy OC Marches in Solidarity with Anaheim Residents Against Police Brutality and Economic Inequality

ANAHEIM, Calif., July 27, 2012 – Today, the people of Occupy Orange County CA in solidarity with the families of the two shooting victims along with embattled Anaheim neighborhood residents are marching at 5:30 p.m. in Anaheim starting in Stoddard Park (on S. 9th St. between W. Orangewood and W. Katella avenues). The peaceful, non-violent resistance march will start atStoddardPark and go downKatella Avenue towardsHarbor Boulevard.

After the protest, citizens are invited back toStoddardParkfor more information about Saturday’s events including an Occupy Orange County CA & Occupy LA Solidarity Livestream Media & Non-Violent Resistance Teach-In at 10 a.m. and another march starting atStoddardParkand ending atHarbor Boulevardat noon. On Sunday,OccupyOrangeCountyCAurges residents to join in the noon protest at the Anaheim Police Department (425 S. Harbor Blvd.).

“The mother (Genevieve Huizar) of Manuel Diaz is wise. She and the rest of the families affected by this senseless and unnecessary tragedy are calling for peace amongst the citizens,” saysOccupyOrangeCountyCAorganizer George Olivio. “They want to see justice served.”

Olivio, who has been in close contact with the embattled and mournfulAnaheimresidents, says the residents are asking the community to stand down on violent activity because violence is not justice.

“They’re crying out for a non-violent, peaceful protest and real justice in the hopes the officers involved in the shootings will be investigated byCalifornia’s Attorney General and on behalf of all eight victims.”

“If found guilty,” says Olivio, “they would like to see the officers involved charged to the full extent of the law.”

“Occupy Orange County CA stands in full solidarity with the families of these victims in the pursuit for non-violent protest and accountability against the unjust racial profiling prejudice and unlawful violence against innocent unarmed citizens who are suffering as the result of a few violent people,” says Olivio.

Occupy OC Urges Citizens to Protest Tomorrow
in Solidarity with Take Back Anaheim

IRVINE, Calif., July 23, 2012 – Occupy Orange County CA organizers are urging all concerned citizens to protest the Anaheim Police’s department’s brutal slayings alongside community group Take Back Anaheim. Citizens tomorrow at 4 p.m. on the steps of Anaheim City Hall (200 S. Anaheim Blvd).

Directions to Anaheim City Hall: http://www.anaheim.net/articlenew2222.asp?id=326

After this weekend’s murders by Anaheim police and a long-standing battle to clean up police brutality in the city, Take Back Anaheim today announced protest plans in conjunction with the embattled residents of Anaheim’s Anna Street neighborhood along with non-violent protesters for justice, including organizers from Occupy Orange County CA.

According to a release by Take Back Anaheim, the group is rallying support for three closely-related demands, two of which will be voted by the Anaheim City Council in a meeting directly following the protest. The demands are:

1. Accountability and reform in a police department that seems to have gone out of control;

2. Reform of Anaheim City Council to a ward elections system — as the ACLU has been demanding — so that neighborhoods like Anna Street will have as much representation on Council as the wealthy Anaheim Hills area;

3. Allow the people of Anaheim a voice on the “Let the People Vote” initiative to ensure that any future corporate subsidies will be attached to guarantees of local jobs and investment in the community.

“We at Occupy Orange County CA and other justice groups are joining in solidarity with the movement Take Back Anaheim and their continuing struggle for justice, democracy, accountability and true representation in the great city of Anaheim,” says activist and Orange Juice Blog publisher Vern Nelson.

“The Council will be voting on whether to put two vital questions onto November’s ballot – whether to change Anaheim’s council to Ward representation as the ACLU prescribes so that neighborhoods like the ones currently suffering repression will finally have a place at the table,” said Nelson, “and whether to force future corporate subsidies which steal from the community and taxpayers to be submitted to a popular vote in what is known as the ‘Let the People Vote!’ initiative.”

“We see a clear connection between these two vital pro-democracy reforms, and reform of a police force that sees their mission as keeping down the underclass,” said Nelson.

Tips for Citizen Protesters:
Dress in light layers as if you were dressing for a day outside and make certain to wear comfortable shoes.
Bring water, hat, sunscreen and a light day pack.
Make sure your smartphone and video camera are fully charged. If you have an extra battery, bring it along.
Bring along a hand-painted protest sign to express your discontent.
Considering packing a small first-aid kit with items such as bandaids, antiseptic, rubber gloves, small scissors, gauze, medical tape and a small bottle of apple cider vinegar (deactivates pepper spray).

Occupy OC cancels Mitt Romney protest observing OWS National Mourning in Solidarity with Aurora, CO

IRVINE, Calif., July 22, 2012 – In observance of the nation’s mourning process over the Colorado shooting incident and in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street organizers, Occupy Orange County CA has canceled what portended to be a huge Get Money Out of Mitt Romney Protest on Monday morning.

A multi-group protest planned to correspond with a $1,000-a-plate Mitt Romney fundraiser at the Hyatt Regency Irvine has been officially canceled by Occupy Orange County CA organizers in observance of OWS solidarity with Aurora, Colo.

“Although we are all tired of our democracy being sold to the highest bidder,” said Occupy Wall Street organizer Aaron Black, “Occupy Wall Street is sensitive to the millions of American citizens who are together mourning the shooting tragedy in Colorado. Many local occupy groups have elected to stand down in observance of this moment of grief and solidarity to send a message of peace and unity with the victims and their families.”

OWS organizers are expecting Romney to fundraise again in Orange County within the next several weeks. Organizers will be calling on the monster Super PACs and their billionaire donors to walk a mile in their shoes as future Get Money Out of Politics actions are already being planned in conjunction with Occupy Orange County CA, Occupy Los Angeles and other Southern California occupy groups.

According to the Orange County Register, “Romney has a 3-to-1 advantage in raising dough in O.C. Through April 30, the presumptive Republican nominee had raised $2.13 million in itemized contributions fromOrange County residents. Obama raised $706,000 in the same period.”

Call to Action from Occupy Boston: A4! Public Transportation for the 99%

by CLIFF on Mar 9, 2012 • 5:00 pm

Public transportation is a right. It is also an integral part of our sustainable future. Rather than fighting price hikes and service cuts, we should be focusing on expanding service and innovating more sustainable and convenient systems for mass transit that are free for all. The economic downturn has been used as a reason to cut back service, raise fares, and layoff workers in Boston and elsewhere. We are told again and again that there is no money, but we have had enough of this lie!

Occupy Orange County – Huntington Beach Update!!

Well we are still on the corners and still standing strong! Right now its actually raining, I’m one of the lucky few, who get to be at home on the computer. Occupy Long Beach is having a Beach Clean-up on the 18th of March @ 11:00am, so naturally Occupy Orange County – Huntington Beach should be having one as well! Same day same time meet at the Occupation and go from there…

Following up on Michael Anderson‘s call for community service ideas short-term for Occupy HB, I just brainstormed the following three. I’m NOT married to any of these nor do I know if they’d “work,” but just to get the ball rolling more…

1) “Free Lemonade Stand.” To showcase how the Occupy approach to economics (solidarity and mutual aid) is different from the “profits above all” philosophy that helped get us into this mess. Free educational flyers with each glass ; )

2) Food drive for the homeless (incl. occupiers?): In Irvine there are often “help the homeless” groups out front of grocery stores… sometimes they ask those going in (or coming out) if they would donate some food items (from a list) to help the homeless. We could do that with a clear bin for an established hunger charity (like Second Harvest) and an optional bin for the “homeless Occupiers” if people WANTED to give something to that specifically too… GREAT chance to explain in a friendly way what we’re about, to flyer etc… as long as you’re prepared for a few negative reactions and can meet them with a smile. Then also PR blast and try to make positive connection with whatever hunger-related group we deliver the goods too… this could be done at many grocery stores simultaneously.

3) I wasn’t so sure about beach clean-up because it’s kind of low-visibility / low-interaction… BUT still a great idea and should be done… there was a guy who used to put little crosses around HB every week to show the number of dead in the Iraq War, symbollically. We could do something like that relating to the economic crisis, bailout of 1% and lack of aid to everyone else… some physical symbolism that “takes up” a large space on the sand… THEN we could clean it all up (plus any other garbage in the area) at the end of the day… it could be advertised as something like a “BEACH-IN” + beach clean-up afterwards.

These are the top 3 ideas right now. Feedback please?

https://www.facebook.com/groups/243580299047190/    (feel free to give feedback here and add yourself if you’d like, this is an open group)

DONATION HELP!

I hate to be the one to ask, because we all know how hard it is to ask for help, but… HELP!!!!

As explained in the donations section of the OOC website, we have a storage unite and can only keep it if we can pay for it… Currently the money is coming out of ONE persons pocket that cant fully afford it. But he was nice enough to get the unite for us for one months… Seeing how long its actually taking to get a physical occupation up and going in Huntington Beach we might need another month for the storage unite… If at all possible even just $1.00 from everyone would be more than enough money to help us keep and possible get another month for storage so we don’t have to toss everything out… The movement appreciates everything you all have done for us, and yourselves! We are all in this together, one world, one love, one mind! Solidarity and Unity with our Brothers and Sisters world wide!

http://www.occupy-oc.org/donations/

PS. There are many other ways to donate, collecting recyclable materials and bringing them to the occupation or anyone on any of the committees (you can email me or even call me if youd like 714-488-4138 starskipper@gmail.com) and we can come pick them up (if not to far) or set up a drop off location! Iv been meaning to start a local in community recycling program to help fund things like this as well as other not for profits such as “Love Is My Cause”, A not for profit that was started during the occupy movement and is currently still getting the legal paperwork finished up…

Occupiers “Going to Surf City, Gonna Have Some Fun!” (Part 1)

This blog has been written by Greg Diamond on MARCH 15, 2012 for www.OrangeJuiceBlog.com I have copied and pasted the start of this blog and the link to finish reading it is at the end of this blog on this site…

(This is Part 1 of a series, and is relatively light-hearted.  Unfortunately, Part 2, appearing later today or tomorrow, won’t be.)

This post was originally to be entitled “Why does the Mayor of Huntington Beach want the Occupy protesters near a High School?”  Thankfully, that take on events is now obsolete — but an interesting story lies behind it.

Disclosure: both I and my Esteemed Publisher Vern Nelson are involved with the Occupy Orange County movement and have been involved to various extents with the events of this story, primarily as liaisons with the city government.  (We’re also role models, of course.  We accept that burden.)  I’m a Civic Liaison, meaning that I negotiate as needed with the city government, police departments, and the like — and as I’ve been doing this the longest and am now being solicited by AARP, I think that I’ll now decree myself the Senior Civic Liaison!

When last I wrote about Occupy Orange County a week ago, the encampment that had moved from Irvine to Fullerton was preparing to leave its second home.  It spent until last Wednesday morning in the Brea Dam campsite, with an advance group already dispatched to the third municipal target — Huntington Beach.  If you’re already familiar with the background and just want the news, go ahead and jump to the third subtitle.

CONTACT THE CITY FOR OCCUPATION!

http://www.occupy-oc.org/contact-the-city/

The city of Huntington Beach has come to OOC and said that they have gotten some “complaints” about the fact we are on the corner. (somewhere around 5 complaints) The complaints ONLY have to deal with how close we are to the high school, and from a parents point of view this is 100% understandable. This is why we need your help! The city is giving us the offer of $4 per person, per night, and we must move every 4 days… This is unacceptable! Money is NOT speech and money should NOT have to be used to ask the government for grievances!

This was brought up to the OOC village after that talk with the city and we came to the conclusion, bring more people out to the corner to pressure the city into giving us a spot to set up and occupy, as well as have as many people call in or email and demand they allow us to occupy for free! TO HUNTINGTON BEACH!

what a day! spent it all cleaning up the Fullerton occupation and moving into Huntington Beach! Looks like its going to be another one of them nights of no sleep and marching on the sidewalks… Not sure how long we are going to have to do this but you never know, it can only be for one night, it can be for a week… Either way we are in Huntington Beach and we are going to start the occupation!

Wish us luck! And feel free to stop by and give a hoot and a holla!

2 more days until Occupalooza – Pep Rally to F29

Well, its crunch time! We have 2 more days until its time for F26! This is some exciting times going on right now. The village is in a frenzy getting all the last minute preparations done  for Sunday. The village is growing in size, we are gathering more and more supporters every day. Today we talked to the city about logistics of food, sound, generators, sanitation, medic tent, and so on. They seem excited to see this come together as much as OOC is excited to be hosting it! Where as we have only passed, so far, 2 of the 3 grievances given to the city of Fullerton, we are still, once again, setting a precedence for future events, movements, social gatherings, and fund raisers… From my understanding Hillcrest park has never had an event hosted in it. I mean yes, there might have been a few birthdays, or picnics being had in it over the years, but nothing compared to this size of an event… Personally, and this is me stepping out of the voice of the village and stating this on my own, like to go somewhere and leave it better than when i got there. And to me, setting this goal everywhere I go changing as much as humanly possible in every aspect of my life and the lives of those around me, even if I don’t know the people, is something I wish everyone could and would aspire to do. Stepping back into the voice of the village, we see this as a success in the occupy movement. Waking people up, and presenting them with the issues that we face in this county, our state, our local cities, and even the world. I think its safe to say that each villager would like me to say, thank you! Thank you everyone for those who have donated! Thank you for those who have come out and shown support! Thank you to those who have helped OOC stay afloat! AND MOST OF ALL! THANK YOU CITY OF IRVINE AND FULLERTON, so far, FOR ALLOWING US TO OCCUPY WITHIN YOUR CITIES!

We got some more prep work to do tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday morning! We hope that you can make it out to Occupalooza – A Pep Rally to F29! Its going to be an amazing time! With some amazing people! And amazing food! This is our one step closer to OCCUPY 2.0, this is our one step closer to world wide equality, this is our one step closer to solving the issues we have in the world! Solidarity to all, and to all, see you on F26!

GOOD NEWS! FULLERTON PASSES 2 OUT OF 3 PROPOSED OCCUPY RESOLUTIONS

Late last night, the Fullerton City Council heard City Manager, Joe Felz present three resolutions proposed by the Occupiers of Occupy OC. (Now encamped for over 130 DAYS AND RUNNING, at the corner of Harbor Blvd. and Brea Blvd.)

… And the news isn’t at all bad. – Two of the resolutions were passed without much contention… and the third will require some new direction (language correction, and possibly a recommendation to support the newly introduced “Disclose Act”) as it moves into it’s new iteration! – I.E. Two outa’ three ain’t bad. The volunteers & City Council have done some pretty notable good in the name of curbing student debt and supporting local businesses. – We’re still here, and the Occupation continues!

HERE ARE THE RESOLUTIONS, AND THEIR RESULTS:

  • RESOLUTION NO. 2012-19 – A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA, REGARDING COMMUNITY INVESTING THROUGH FUND TRANSFERS. (Seeking to house and hold as great a percentage of the city’s budget in local, community investing and local-lending banks and credit unions as possibly, by creating a policy wherein: Each time money is transfered or reserved, local community banks must be surveyed in an attempt to discern their ability to house said monies, and that larger external banking institutions need only be used, when local businesses are for some reason insufficiently secure or inadequate.)

RESOLUTION PASSES: 4 to 1

  • RESOLUTION NO. 2012-20 – A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA, PROTECTING UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FROM PREDATORY LENDING. (Seeking through communication with school staff to prohibit the predatory distribution of credit cards on college campuses with enticements such as “free gifts”, distribution of credit cards without credit checks, “preying on the parents” – [the distribution of credit cards to students without an income, on the demographical presumption that "the parents will pay"] and the practice of card distribution to students without sufficient credit education.)

RESOLUTION PASSES: UNANIMOUS

  • RESOLUTION NO. 2012-21 - A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA, REJECTING CORPORATE / UNION PERSONHOOD AND OPPOSING THE RULING IN THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT CASE CITIZENS UNITED V. FEDERAL ELECTIONS COMMISSION. (Joining over 100 other US cities in passing a resolution of support for a motion to amend the constitution to clarify that only humans are people, purchasing power is not interchangeable with speech, and that limiting and/or disclosing the political campaign contributions of Corporate Entities, does in fact not infringe on the free speech rights of that “corporate person”. Moreover that unlimited, undisclosed media purchasing power is innately corrosive to the democratic process.)

MOTION DOES NOT CARRY: 2 in favor, 3 opposed

Now, while there are some disappointed faces amongst the Occupy villagers, that our first attempt at gathering national support to overturn Citizens United or, as it is said, “Move To Amend”, we are in no way defeated, nor are we of the belief that the shortcomings (read as: under-clarified & under-communicated intent) in terms of the draft, rest on the City Council’s shoulders at all. – We do generally believe that each of the reasons for witholding support (which were both matters of principle, and matters of fact) were in fact not addressed in writing (via correction of language), or in meetings by the Occupiers, so as to assuage concerns of direction and intent ahead of time. – Which, as we now seek to improve as usual, we are adamantly certain will not happen in the second pass.

We’ve got our work cut out for us.

For the time being, the Civic Liaison group will be holding regular, daily meetings at the public library, with laptops (at a time soon to be announced). AND YOUR PARTICIPATION IS WELCOME!

And in the meantime…

We leave you with our greatest love exposed, and our hearts and our tears on the floor, as tonight we hold vigil, in the loss of one of our own. – An earthquake in a thimble… a titan among Occupiers, and one of the best among us. – We will miss you, Alex.
